Day 1 of Blanche's diet!

Post by GillianK on Fri Jan 13, 2012 5:39 am

Blanche's diet started today!

It was branflakes and banana for breakfast, and a soup of peas, barley, lentils, and fresh veg for dinner! She's horrified! She keeps running up to me, sitting on my chest and giving me a look as if to say 'are you actually going to feed me today, cause I ain't eating that!' She was in protest all morning, refusing to even look at her breakfast, when normally she'd be swimming in a bowl of honey porridge, but now finally she's at the soup, reluctantly nibbling at it. Poor Blanche!

She's still sneezing away, but as I keep telling her, at least this diet will be more vitamin enriched! She doesn't share my views, and has twice taken a bite at the wire connecting my mouse to my laptop, as punishment for feeding her healthy food in addition to daring to give her her antibiotics, which she also did not take kindly to and squealed for all she was worth!

Dorothy on the other hand hardly eats at all! She takes a teeny amount of food each day but drinks about 3 times more than Blanche does! Not sure why, but Blanche never had any objections, until today!

Awh bless.
If she's not impressed you could always try giving some naughty treats among the healthy stuff & changing her over to healthy food gradually. When I first got my first two boys there were fed nuggets and NOTHING else. Their tummies did not react well when I tried to change them straight to real food, so I had to keep giving them nuggets for a while & gradually reducing the amount.

Yes, I might give her a wee bit of custard and biscuits later on cause it's prob unfair on her changing her diet so drastically, without even consulting her!

If you think that Dorothy isn't getting her fair share maybe you could feed her a bit extra during Blanche's out time? That way Blanche gets you all to herself too Wink Good luck with the diet, keep us updated Smile

Hi Katherine, no it's not that Dorothy isn't getting her fair share. Blanche is happy to share the food with her and she has full access to it. But she refuses to. Even during Blanche's free range time, and even when Blanche is sleeping (which she's doing more of these days as she's not 100% with a resp infection) Dorothy just doesn't eat. I'm actually a bit worried, but gonna give it more time. I've only had her a week.

Maybe try weighing Dorothy every day/every other day for the next week or so?
She might be getting food when you're not around.
If she's losing weight you might want to try something high colorie and tasty to get her going- baby food & malt paste are good.
Then if she's eating that you could mix that with other healthier food after a few days and then gradually wean her off the high cal stuff?
I'm not sure that would entirely work.. But if she's def not eating it would be worth a try.

Leave her be I would, if there is no other cause for concern like dull, stary coat or her seeming aloof then I would say it's most likely just her way. They're all different after all Smile

I would guess it's because she's *used* to it - if that makes sense? I have had numerous rescues in the past who've barely eaten a thing, because they never had the food there to eat when they were babies.

Bertie was the same, I remember I couldn't tempt him with anything at first, I'm amazed he stayed alive the first few weeks. Now he's an indiscriminant pig Laugh
