Do rats suffer nosebleeds?

Post by kirm on Tue Jan 24, 2012 4:12 am

Hi all

We've noticed over the last week that Pippin sometimes had a more pinkish tint than usual around his nose sometimes darker than others but we thought it was just food, but today there seems to be more and it looks like blood - not a huge amount but crusted around his nose. Also, the top of the hammock tube that they have seems pinkish coloured too. Not sure whats going on here being novice rat lovers Sad Any advice?

I'd say it's more likely to be porphyrin than blood. If the rat is otherwise in good health I'd be inclined to leave it to clear up as it's probably just a minor infection. If it was blood then it would be brown when dry.

Oh ok thanks - its definitely pinkish in colour. Is porphyrin common in rats and what exactly is it?

It's a component of rat tears and snot. A small amount isn't anything to worry about, and can be caused by a minor irritation as well as mild infections. Larger amounts would definitely benefit from veterinary advice.
