Dorothy isn't bonding with me at all!

Post by GillianK on Wed Jan 25, 2012 3:51 pm

Dorothy has been with me for about 3 weeks now. By the time Blanche was with me 3 days, she was sitting on my shoulder, licking me, jumping on my hand and seeing me as a friend, eating out of my hand etc, and was very pleased to see my hand coming towards her, was very approachable, and has in the the last 16 months since I got her become the tamest little rat I've ever come across.

But Dorothy is different. She nearly has a heart attack any time you put a hand near her, even when I'm putting their food bowl in, even very slowly. She hears the cage door opening and whilst Blanche rushes the the entrance to say hello to me, Dorothy just zooms off into her tunnel like lightning. She can be very difficult to catch! I let them loose on the sofa and bed whilst I'm studying or reading and she will climb on my legs and sniff my hands, once she sat on my shoulder for a bit, but it has to be on her terms. She won't allow me to approach her! She is so very different to Blanche. I get the feeling if Dorothy had been my first rat rather and Blanche and Stella, I'd not have been so taken with rats.

Don't get me wrong. Dorothy is a sweet little rat, very cute and lovely, but why so timid???

I've done so much to get her to trust me, and she sees how Blanche trusts me.

I know Dorothy was 8 months when I got her. Do other people find that, taking on older rats is more challenging?

She's older - and judging by where she came from has probably not been handled very much. She's not really used to people, and needs lots of gentle interaction. You could try 'forced socialisation' - I would recommend getting a 'ratbag' (think Rat Warehouse sell them) - and getting her out every day for ten minutes (increasing the time a little each time) to sit in the bag, being stroked and fussed, and made to sit quietly. You will find that eventually she'll learn to love that, and will bond with you very well.

xx

Thanks for advice. I love that site - Rat Warehouse - Just went on to it and spent £45. lol. Bought a little ratbag for Dorothy (be great for trips to the vet too), and a load of food, toys, treats and vitamins. I even bought dried mealworms for them! Never thought of that before! Be interesting!

they all have different personalities too,but sounds like progress that she will walk over to you etc.i would maybe handfeed her a bit,let her walk all over you, maybe place a few treats on your person and let her come to you Smile you'll get there and itll be totally worth it Smile
