Hoarding

Post by katherine on Sun Feb 05, 2012 7:43 am

Does anyone here have ratties who hoard? Ishmael in particular has stashed away over a bowl's worth in their cube Shocked I stayed to watch them eat this evening (I've seen him run off with it and return for more but assumed he didn't do it with the WHOLE bowl) and it turns out Mawie is doing it a bit too. They never used to do this - it's like they've been watching hamsters on tv Laugh

A few of my girlies are hoarders Tongue I have to be careful not to give the Skinnier girls more than one treat in the cage, cost they'll hoard them, forget all about it and then the fatty comes along and scoffs the lot Laugh they scamper off and hide it,then turn right back around and come back for more with this very convincing "but I swear I didn't get any" look

Mine hoard the odd time, particularly if I give treats in the cage. I scatter feed but & don't fine they do it that much since I started that.

Same here. It's difficult to hoard when the food's already strewn around the cage.

I used to scatter feed them, but I find with the tray being so shallow it all gets kicked out. That was fine when they were indoors because I just swept it up and popped it back in the next day, but now they're in the shed (where we have mice living underneath) I worry that this will attract other furries I don't want there Sad But I hadn't considered that, it's probably the reason they've started doing it.

Ted is my champion food embezzler (although he swears, its just resting in his account) who will scamper back and forth to the food bowl until its empty. Smile
Jack just watches the whole thing and after Ted is done, he casually strolls over to eat the food (which is a shorter distance then to the food bowl) Laugh

My girls are less conspicuous, but they do hoard. They seemed to go all loose when free ranging, hoarding food and any items they find behind the big armchair. (Jack usually makes a beeline for it as soon its his range time, to enjoy the girls looting spoils Big Grin )

It really great, we don't have to tidy up the room as much, just checking behind the chair to find any lost items Smile

Merry and Pippin have not quite caught on to hoarding, they, like good Bongo Fury rats go along to the bowl for something to eat and sometimes take it back to their little house to gobble up and return for more, other times they just take from the bowl and step aside to eat. As Laura says they scoff the lot quite quickly, so no real hoarding, as yet!! I have started to scatter a little, which they do enjoy searching for. Steve

Stella hoarded every time I put their dinner in. She had her own corner where she kept her food. But neither Blanche nor Dorothy hoard.

Laugh Laugh Laugh Yeah Steve, I think it's a surprise to me because I'm used to having Bongo Fury boys, and, like you and Laura say, they're not exactly known for leaving food hanging around Laugh

one of my girls does this, she'll take more than half of their bowl up to her bed! i don't really mind it though, i just put it back whenever i spot it. and she looks adorable when she does it anyway! Laugh she doesn't do it that often though, maybe once or twice a week Smile
