lice treatments

Post by EssDubya on Tue Mar 06, 2012 10:13 pm

I went to the vets yesterday looking for a lice treatment for my rats and asked for Ivermectin but they were out of stock. They gave my spray on frontline instead (not the spot-on stuff) Is this ok to use with rats?

As I said to you on FB - you can use it, but be extremely careful as it's highly toxic to them if ingested Sad

If you can't get the ivermectin I'd get a 'wipe out' wipe. They cost about 3 euro and are non toxic - they work by smothering the parasites. You just scrunch it through the fur (like you're towel drying them) til it's all wet then leave it to dry. We used it on Monty when he had lice and it worked very well (though I think we may have given ivermectin as well - can't really remember).I wouldn't use the frontline if you're in any doubt at all - my personal thing is I won't use anything unless it expessly says on the packaging that it's suitable for my animal or otherwise on the advice of a vet.

I wouldn't use something just because a vet has advised it either! Wink

I've not heard of those wipes Katherine - do you know what the active ingredient is? Smile

probably for the best having met some of the not so good vets out there actually Laugh

It's actually silicone, it blocks the spiracles of fleas, lice, ticks, mites etc without leaching poisons through the skin of the animal. It comes in a house spray too - fantastic stuff! I hate spraying poison about the place and putting it on my animals.

I used to sell a lot of them in maxi zoo (hence how I know about them), other than that zooplus would have them I'm sure, dunno about any other actual shops Smile
