Hair loss

Post by GillianK on Mon Apr 30, 2012 10:00 pm

In addition to sneezing, Blanche is losing quite a bit of hair especially on her lower back. In fact its almost more like its thinning out than anything else. She's still eating and drinking and seems active enough. I think its time I ordered in the baytril again? She seems clean enough, I can't see any mites or anything like that on her. I don't understand why she's losing her condition.

Hair loss can be so many things, Cushings I believe can cause it, but more common causes are barbering, parasites, old age (I think kidney trouble - but don't quote me!)... so really it's a multitude of stuff, and I don't think antibiotics is likely to help.

Is there anything I should do? Or is it best I just leave her to it. She's not very old but perhaps old enough for a rat; she's 21 months.

I don't think you need to do anything. It could be a few things as Zoundz said. I'd especially not bother with antibiotics as it's unlikely to be the result of an infection, given she's otherwise fine.
Can you post a picture?
