Keeping rats cool.

Post by redrach on Sun May 27, 2012 1:45 am

Just thought I'd see what everyone else's tips are for keeping their ratties cool at the minute.
I've been refreshing their water every few hours when i'm at home with water from the fridge. They've also had windows open and fans going. In the evening I give a bowl of water and peas for a wee pea fish in the cage. And today I've picked up some of the slate from our allotment and put it in the freezer to give them. I'm not sure it'll work with slate, but I think terracotta and other tiles are good for keeping them cool, so fingers crossed. So far no one seems too hot, they occasionally have a bit of a warm tail, but no pancaking.

What else do you guys do to keep them cool?

Ice and frozen fruit Smile mine seem to be doing fine,we're lucky we keep them in our sitting room which is usually the coolest rom in the house.so its precautionary, keeping an eye on the oldies Love I'm going to give them some doc squiggles from the fridge in a bit and maybe some frozen peas.I have those ice bags which can be used as cold compreses so could always put one in the cage wrapped ina towel

Cans of beans, frozen then wrapped in socks! Grin Seems to work quite well. Fridged tiles work too Smile Frozen fruit and veg... must work out something this week as shed is too hot at 26 degrees.

Oh, Laura, do you know a temperature range which is safe for them? The only way I can tell if they are too warm at the minute is by checking if their tail feels warm.

30 degrees is dangerous. Less than 5 degrees isn't good either. I try to keep the shed at 10-12 in the winter, and under 27 in the summer... that's the hard bit!

the beans thing... do you freeze the whole tin?

I've been giving them water with ice cubes in it, ice cubes on their own and fruit frozen into ice cubes, and frozen yoghurt pots. That and keeping the windows open of course Smile I've also stuck a terracotta pot in the cage Smile
