Twoflower's really sick :(

Post by redrach on Sat Jun 30, 2012 2:03 am

So I was away for 2 days, back last night, all rats in good form, out for treats, no problems.
Got up this morning to feed them and Twoflower didn't get out of his hammock (normally out as soon as I go into the room). Put food in, still stayed in his hammock. Called him a few times and he came down. Very slow to come down, walked right past the food and lay down, or more flopped down, at my hand. Didn't seem at all himself. He then got up and went and flopped down beside the door to their igloo.

Backstory is that he had an undiagnosed eye problem about a month ago. No eye problems since. Then last week he had a cut with a little lump, assumed to be swelling from the cut. It bled quite a bit but would stop and then it seemed if he bothered it, it would bleed a lot again. By the time I was going away early on Wednesday morning (no ratsitter, only one night away), he seemed fine and it hadn't bled that day.

So I took him to the vets this morning, he puffed up the whole way there (didn't the last time we went) and remained puffed up until I brought him home again. The vet checked the wound, we're not sure if it's a puncture from a fight or if he'd had some sort of lump that had burst. The vet also checked breathing (which is fine) and his abdomen (as his poo was a little dark, but stomach etc felt fine, so probably dehydration?). He's on baytril for now in case the wound/lump/whatever it is gets or is infected and other than that the vet wasn't too sure what else to recommend. It didn't help that I normally search for what I think could be wrong and check medications, but didn't have time to check anything before I went.

He ate some baby food when we got back, I thought it might be good if he is dehydrated. And now he's sleeping.

Anyway, does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? Or anything else I can do for him?

Someone also recommended some calpol, so he's had some of that.
He's perked up a tiny bit, he's less foofy now, but he still looks awful and is lethargic and cold Sad

I'm sorry Rache, I haven't a clue, just the usual advice really, make sure he takes plenty of liquids and keep him warm. I hope things improve soon! Sad

Hope he gets better - not much I can add - but some good advice over on NFRS.

xx
