Teeth problem

Post by GillianK on Wed Jun 19, 2013 11:25 pm

I've noticed that one of my 4 rats has got very long teeth. Dorothy seems to sit with her mouth open as her teeth are so long, and sleeps that way. The other 3 girls seem fine and they are all the same age (2 years old)

Dorothy is in great health otherwise, a healthy weight, glossy coat, bright eyes so she must eat and drink well. She has never shown any sign of health problems to date (touch wood!) She can be handled and cuddled but prefers not to be, so I am reluctant to take her to the vets to do something about her teeth. It just doesn't look comfortable. They have always been provided with rat toys designed for grinding down teeth and they use them but then I'm not able to tell if Dorothy herself is using them as they all live together.

Should I do something about her teeth?

Can you get a photo?

It doesn't sound like they can be that bad - normally when they get bad you notice weight loss and loss of condition first. The gnawing treats/toys are nice, but not really needed, as rats grind their teeth down on their own :)so it's when they can no longer do that there's a problem.

xx
