Best Irish Rat products / website?

Post by lc822 on Tue Nov 05, 2013 12:48 am

Hi all,

Just moved to Dublin from UK and am looking for best place to buy decent rat products (pet store or online). I used to use shredded dust free cardboard for the cage and could order a homemade base mix made specifically for rats over there. I am quickly running low on supplies so I need your help.

Thanks everyone. Grin

Hi,

Well, welcome to Dublin and I hope you have settled in well.

The best online retailer is zooplus, both in terms of price and postage.

As for pet stores, there are Maxizoos in Finglas and Tallaght and a Petmania in Santry. Both these shops are a bit overpriced and have a rather poor selection for small animals. In fact, if you are looking for ectobed or finacard, it seems like it is simply unavailable. In terms of the city centre, I like Shauna's Pet Shop on Capel St, which does sell Back2Nature.

All of the UK online shops like rat rations and the rat warehouse do deliver here. The products are reasonably priced but the delivery is very expensive.

Good Luck!

Thank you for the tips! Smile

I took a quick look at zooplus and I don't see any cardboard or paper based products just wood shavings and hay. Would anyone here recommend one of these products for rats? I was under the impression that they are both not ideal for them for one reason or another.

As for the food that is supplied, any specific recommendations? I was spoiled with ratrations in the past, but the shipping is too insane to deal with now that I'm in Ireland. It was already quite dear in the UK!

I'm so glad this forum exists!! Laugh

Zooplus also do linen, cotton and hemp bedding. These are probably better than hay or straw. I used hemp in the past and loved it. Note, Maxizoo also sell hemp, if you are stuck.

As for food stuffs, I wasn't sure about commercial mixes to begin with so figured mixing a bunch together would do the trick.

I use the JR Farm Feast and the JR Wellness food, roughly 75% the former and 25% the latter. My rats love it and are in nice condition, with good shiney coats. I tried mixing in the JR Farm Food Adult Rat but it has lots of chaff and my rats largely left it behind. I generally feed a 50/50 diet of dry food and fresh food and find this works well for my rats.

I agree on postage to Ireland. However, I find ratrations and the ratwarehouse very useful for small things like Nutrical, Daily Rat 3, Dr Squiggles and those great big hedgehog and toothbrush shaped chews which my rats adore. For small orders, the postage is about 10 pounds but they refund any excess.

Good Luck!

Also, if using zooplus, don't forget to sign up their newsletter and get a 5% discount on your first order. Also, if your order is over 100euro, use the STOCKUPANDSAVE coupon code for a 3% discount.

I just tried to order from Zooplus and they only seem to accept bank transfers as payment. I make a point only to use paypal or my credit card for online orders. I found this a bit strange! Are there any other decent websites to order from, or can I find the hemp bedding and decent rat food through Maxizoo?

Thanks.

I have had no trouble using a credit card on zooplus.

Yeah, we've always used card on Zooplus too - perhaps try and phone them and see what the problem is? Smile

God quality woodshavings are fine for rats by the way Smile just thought I'd put that out there as a possibility for you Smile

xx
