Hello! Grin

I have nothing available at the moment, and do have a waiting list, but hopefully it wouldn't be too long a wait - probably about 6 months or so Smile

We have a Christmas Social/pet show in West Cork on the 15th of December, it's a great chance for you to meet some rats and some other rat owners, if you wanted to come along? Smile

xx

Thanks anyway Smile I might be able to get some babies by January as MaxiZoo in Midleton might be able to get some in by then. I guess I'm just a little impatient to get some new ratties Tongue that sounds like so much fun but I'd have no way of getting there as I'm a poor student who doesn't drive Sad

Hi,

I too was impatient and went down the pet shop route. Aside from other ethical considerations like rat farms, cruelty, etc., I wouldn't recommend it for a first time rat owner. I learned alot from my three pet shop girls but it literally took months to socialise them and one could argue they never really socialised, just learned to tolerate - even now they scare more easily than my other two girls (from an accidental litter, handled from birth). It really is worth the wait and the effort in organisation to have socialised, healthy pets, not to mention the support from a breeder or rescue.

Good Luck!

D.

I agree we went down the petshop route and had an accidental litter. But you're better off to wait for breeder babies or rescues if they come up. But you're in the right place for info whilst you're waiting Laugh

I might consider waiting for a breeder although I'm not a first time rat owner so I think I could handle less sociable rats. If it's any consolation MaxiZoo buys directly from a breeder named Peter (don't know if anyone knows of him) so I feel a bit more confident about buying from them.

They probably don't. Maxi zoo and a lot of other petshops will get animals from a variety of animal breeders who do not necessarily breed the animals as pets (not that thats bad once its ethical and humane), "Peter" is probably the cheapest supplier this week. Remember staff in petshops are paid to sell stuff and they are often lied to so customers believe they are getting what they want and there is nothing bad happening behind the scenes, there is only a handfull of petshop staff that won't lead you astray and you don't know who they are unless you know them (obviously).

'Peter' will be a huge scale supplier, like Simon's Rodents in the UK:
http://www.simonsrodents.co.uk/

and very much (probably worse actually) like this one in Holland:
http://ratz.co.uk/rodentfarm.html

Really strongly advise you not to go down petshop route - lack of knowledge is fair enough, but impatience is not really a good reason to fund these kinds of places Smile

You mention Middleton - that must mean you're not toooo far, perhaps a lift could be sorted if you did want to come down on Sunday - you could post on our FB page or on here asking if anyone has space from Cork? Smile

xx
